Luckily I don't use the Window's defender (I have another virus protector running) so I knew the notification was a scam to get me to click on it, which would likely have loaded a virus on my computer. But, most average users seeing a virus warning that looks legitamite I'm sure would click on it and not realize that they have become a victim.
